Week 2 Should students Play Games (software) in school?
I believe students should be allowed to play educational games in school as long as the games are tied into the curriculum. As and educator, I have observed increase class participation among students using educational gaming software. Students find these computer games exciting and stimulating. Students can sometimes get confused about which part of the activity is the game and which part is the skill. Teachers have to make sure they reiterate the importance of the game as to help the student focus on the rules outside of the game to successfully use the skills in classroom activities.

Carlecia, I also posted on this topic. I agree with you. The problem we run into with this is the misuse of computer games. Teachers are guilty of using computer games as time fillers instead of academic reinforcement. I loved seeing the excitement and academic progress gained from the use of computer games when I used them in my classroom.

ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree with you more. The participation I receive from my students with the use of educational games is great. I find that computer games highlight some of my shyer students, especially when we print and post results in the classroom. They love to see that!

I chose this topic as well. I agree with you that these activities can be helpful for holding student attention and motivation, but they can also be confusing as far as having the students focus on the fact that they are using a skill, not just playing a game. One way I try to combat this is by choosing a specific game and telling them what it teaches them instead of letting them go on a site that has many "educational" games for them to choose to play.
ReplyDeleteI also think that educational software games are great if used in the right way! I tutored after school two years ago and we used software and the students loved it! They begged to come!
